Bomba "I Can Fix It" Workshop
In 2001, a big dream came true for us when funding from the National
Endowment, the City of Austin, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the
Institute of Puerto Rican Culture made it possible to bring Modesto Cepeda,
our teacher of the last four years to Austin for the first time,
for a Bomba workshop and joint performance. The funding also made
it possible to commission handmade barriles for us from the island!
We were proud to have the first barriles in Austin Texas!!!
Imagine the shock and horror we felt a year later, when we accidently
smashed our hand through one barrile head -- two weeks before a major
performance!! It was a good a time as any to figure out what to do in
such an emergency! Thankfully, among other things, we discovered one
of our Dads was an expert in fixing barriles!
Here are our amazing pictures as our buleadores learn this special art!
Don't ask!!!
After a good night's soaking.
It's amazing the things that Dads know!
Do we look relieved or what!!!
Good to go!
