14th Birthday Celebration &
Disaster Relief (Texas Wildfires)
Sept. 11th, 2011, 2-5pm
On September 11, 2011, 2-5pm PRFDance partnered with the Capital Area Food Bank of
Texas to turn our 14th Anniversary celebration into a Disaster Relief event to help
our communities displaced by the Texas Wildfires.
Approximately 150 cultural tourists, from Houston to Dallas, as well as members
of our community joined our special guests, the Csardas Hungarian Dancers to
celebrate our annual birthday event with cake and candles, thanks to sponsorship
by Fiesta Mart! Visitors of all ages enjoyed traditional to contemporary music and
dance by PRFDance Performing Company and Youth, as well as a special percussion
circle led by PRFDance's own master of percussion.
The Borinqueneers Motorclub joined our Disaster Relief efforts, adding to
donations of non-perishable foods, water, and baby supplies to help our City
stocks that had been running low in this critical time. Due to the extended
drought -- the worst recorded in 150 years -- 16-mile-long walls of fire and
smoke had destroyed more than 100,000 acres that week. 57 wildfires
had destroyed 1,000 homes, and most of the 6,000-acre Basdrop State Park (95%).
More than 3.5 million Texas acres had burned since December, an area roughly
the size of Connecticut.
We closed our event with an authentic Taino Areyto (ceremonial dance)
to thank God for 14 wonderful years, and the opportunity to help others.
The Areyto ended in a Guaytiao (friendship dance) that everyone was
able to participate in, a Taino tradition taught to us by
El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma Cu A Boriken.
Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance is happy to have been able to share the joy of
our rich traditions with our community these last 14 years, and hand down our
heritage to the next generation! Enjoy the memories!
